Biomass Briquette OR Bio Coal is made from agricultural, wooden and forestry wastes by high compression process without adding any chemical, glue or binder. It is thus ‘binder-less’ technology product resulting in 100% natural eco-friendly, pollution-free solid fuel. Biomass briquettes are a renewable source of energy and avoid adding fossil carbon to the atmosphere.
A number of companies in India have switched from furnace oil, fire-wood and coal to biomass briquettes to save costs on boiler fuels. Many companies are using biomass briquettes as a fuel to earn Carbon Credit which is indirect advantage.
Demand and use biocoal briquettes is increasing constantly due to number of reasons like; hike in costs of other fuels like FO,diesel, natural gas, coal, fire-wood and electricity; the need for energy resource security; and pollution control measures.
A popular biomass briquette takes a waste produce such as sawdust, groundnut shells, cotton stalk, castor seed shells etc.; compresses it and then extrudes it to make a reconstituted log that can replace firewood and coal. The Calorific Value (GCV) of the bio-coal is3900+ KCal/Kg. Moisture content of a briquette can be as low as 4%, whereas green firewood may be as high as 55%.Biocoal has high density around 1000 Kg/M³ saves transport costs and space in storage.A very low moisture and ash content around 8% makes briquette preferable solid fuel. Due to the vast availability and constant generation of agricultural wastes, supply of briquettes can be easily available through the year with desired quantity.
Briquettes are cheaper - CV per rupee spent is more compared to coal or fire-wood.
